Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the South Downs,
this listed, flint, farmer’s cottage was in desperate need of refurbishment.
The extension provides a modern interior space whilst still being enclosed
within an 18th century external shell.
The conservion officer of Wealden district demanded
that the flint and brickwork of the extension matched the original house,
not only in dimension but also in the size, colour and texture of the lime
mortar used.
Detailed working drawings had to be provided by
the architect Anthony Sherwin, to match the intricate joinery that was
evident throughout the existing cottage.
Internally our client could express their design
skills in specifying the materials and finishes to be used.
The Fired Earth roll-top bath was positioned
so that the views could be enjoyed whilst bathing.
A mixture of handmade pavers and extra-wide oak floor
boards, fixed with handmade nails, were used on the floor to match
the construction of the existing cottage.
