Traditional-style extensions onto listed buildings are arguably more
controversial than their radical contemporary cousins these days, many
architects and conservation officers argue that the new structure has to
betray its era.
To successfully create an extension that provides modern spaces within a
charming traditional exterior is therefore a mark of the fine attention to
detail paid not only by architect Anthony Sherwin RIBA but also by AJ Hammond’s
team of craftsmen.
The use of external materials and construction
methods that were used back in the 18th century were specified by the local
conservation officer of Wealden council. Local Sussex sandstone layed in
a traditional hydraulic lime mortar was expertly sourced and layed by our
award winning stone mason Guy Lawford. Kent peg tiles for the roof and
bespoke oak joinery, match the materials on this cottage which is situated
in a area of outstanding natural beauty in the weald of East Sussex.
